REVT#1: Increase renewables energy generation

Categories: News

How does REFORMERS plan to increase renewables energy generation in Energy Valleys? The REFORMERS project runs part of its research in the Flagship valley in Alkmaar and plans to test and replicate preliminary and mature results within the different Satellite energy valleys for replication. The research is organised around five clusters, or “tracks”. In this article we describe the Research track #1 on how to increase renewables generation.

In a pioneering step towards sustainable energy, the REFORMERS project under Renewable Energy Valley Track #1 – REVT#1 is making significant strides, by increasing the generation of renewable energy produced within the Flagship Valley of Alkmaar. With a robust base of 13 GWh of solar and 23 GWh of wind energy, alongside substantial bio-energy output, REFORMERS Consortium sets to expand the renewable energy sources through the implementation of biomethane and clean hydrogen production within the Flagship Valley of Alkmaar.

One of the highlights is the HYNOCA initiative at InVesta’s expertise centre, aiming to produce 30 kg of clean hydrogen per hour from organic waste through advanced thermolysis processes. This method not only yields hydrogen but also produces biochar, a byproduct that serves as a valuable carbon sink. Further enhancing the project’s green credentials, Sustenso is developing a digester that utilises local agricultural waste to generate up to 7.5 million m³ of biomethane annually. This process substitutes natural gas consumption, reducing greenhouse gas emissions significantly. Connected to this, a 2,000 m² Photobioreactor will cultivate algae to capture CO2, turning biogas emissions into valuable biomass like cyanobacteria, used in novel foods and feedstock.

FUTURE OUTLOOK

Looking towards 2030 and beyond, the Dutch Regional Energy Strategies have earmarked the Alkmaar region to ramp up its renewable energy production from 0.10 TWh to 0.62 TWh. This will involve additional wind turbines and an expansive solar field, thereby bolstering the region’s capacity for renewable energy carriers. Through these initiatives, REFORMERS not only enhances current energy production capabilities but also sets a robust foundation for future sustainable energy solutions.
