The transition towards a sustainable energy system requires not only the widespread use of renewable sources, but also solutions that ensure flexibility, efficiency, and effective integration. Thermal Energy Storage (TES) responds directly to this need: it allows heat to be stored and used when needed, optimising the use of renewables and reducing the strain on energy grids.
The European project ThumbsUp is actively promoting the potential of TES by developing innovative thermal storage systems based on phase-change and thermo-chemical materials, designed to be easily integrated into buildings. These technologies increase energy density and lower investment costs, while supporting power-to-heat strategies, grid balancing, and greater energy independence.
To explore these themes further, the REFORMERS project is partnering with ThumbsUp and the international initiative IEA HPT TCP Annex 61 “Heat Pumps in Positive Energy Districts” to host a Knowledge Exchange Forum dedicated to the role of TES in Energy Valleys and Positive Energy Districts (PEDs).
From challenges to prototypes
The session will delve into real cases and technical challenges, starting with the REFORMERS pilot site in Heiloo (Netherlands). Here, the integration of PVT panels, PCM-based TES systems, and heat pumps in residential buildings has presented several technical hurdles. ThumbsUp’s solutions aim to overcome these barriers, offering operational flexibility, both short- and long-duration storage, and easy integration across diverse building types in Europe.
The Forum will also be an opportunity to showcase the capabilities of the ThumbsUp systems, which enable building-to-grid coupling, support peak shifting, and maximise the use of renewable energy through a modular and scalable approach.
A Format Designed for Dialogue
Knowledge Exchange Forums are interactive events designed to encourage direct dialogue between experts, stakeholders, and European projects. Each session begins with a focused presentation by a guest expert involved in the field, followed by an open discussion with all participants. These forums offer a valuable opportunity to share insights, explore technical solutions, and strengthen collaborative networks.
